At least two people are dead, and several others are injured after a driver rammed a car into a crowd in the German city of Mannheim on Monday.

Police said Monday afternoon that a suspect was in custody, adding that they could not confirm if additional suspects were involved.

It happened on a pedestrian street in downtown Mannheim as workers were on their lunch breaks, police spokesperson Stefan Wilhelm said. He added that the area had been set up for an annual carnival, but no events were taking place at the time.

“The pedestrian zone was well frequented, so unfortunately we cannot say at the moment how many people were injured in this incident,” he said.

State Interior Minister Thomas Strobl told German news agency dpa that the driver is a 40-year-old German from the nearby state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
