On January 26, 2025, at approximately 4:21 p.m., a Jasper County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on State Road 14 for a vehicle traveling 70 MPH in a 55 MPH zone. The driver, identified as 42-year-old Matthew W. Huttle, was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was found to be classified as a Habitual Traffic Violator, a felony under Indiana Code 9-30-10-16.

Upon being informed of his arrest, Huttle fled back to his vehicle and made movements consistent with reaching for a weapon. The Deputy attempted to intervene, leading to a struggle. During the altercation, Huttle raised what appeared to be a firearm, prompting the Deputy to discharge his weapon multiple times. Huttle was struck, and despite immediate lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A loaded 9mm handgun and additional ammunition were later recovered from inside the vehicle near the area where Huttle had reached. Dash camera footage confirmed that he raised an object while inside the car. Following an investigation by the Indiana State Police District 13 Criminal Investigations Division, the case was presented to the Clinton County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Based on the evidence and legal statutes under Indiana Code 35-41-3-2 and 35-41-3-3, the Deputy’s use of deadly force was deemed legally justified. Investigators determined that probable cause existed for Huttle’s arrest and that he posed an imminent threat by attempting to access a firearm. As a result, no charges will be filed against the Deputy, and the case is now officially closed.
