Aces High Overview -

Set during World War I, Aces High follows a young and inexperienced British officer, Lt. Stephen Croft (Peter Firth), who arrives at the Western Front to serve in the Royal Flying Corps. Eager but naïve, Croft is taken under the wing of Major Gresham (Malcolm McDowell), a charismatic yet battle-worn squadron leader who hides his inner struggles behind bravado and heavy drinking.

As Croft adjusts to the brutal reality of aerial combat, he quickly learns that the war in the skies is just as deadly and unforgiving as the trenches below. Gresham, burdened with responsibility and survivor’s guilt, does his best to keep his squadron motivated while dealing with the ever-present fear of death. The film explores themes of camaraderie, the psychological toll of war, and the fleeting nature of heroism as the pilots engage in dangerous dogfights with German aircraft.

With each mission, Croft witnesses the staggering losses suffered by his fellow pilots, realizing that their life expectancy is shockingly short. As the war grinds on, he must decide whether to succumb to despair or find the courage to keep flying, even when survival seems impossible.

Loosely based on R.C. Sherriff’s play "Journey’s End", Aces High offers a gripping and realistic portrayal of WWI aviation, emphasizing the human cost of war rather than glorifying combat.
