Part 1: Saddam Hussein led an invasion of his oil-rich neighbor, Kuwait, in 1990 in an attempt to seize control of Kuwait's assets. In response, the UN assembled the largest International Force since Korea in an effort to free Kuwait. Led by General Norman Schwarzkopf, the allies began the largest are offensive since World War I labeled "Operation Desert Storm". The allies, in a 38-day bombardment used tomahawk cruise missiles, Patriots to intercept Iraq scud missiles, and RAF Tornado fighters to cripple Iraqi communications and force the grounding of the Iraqi Air Force.

Part 2: the land War - " Operation Desert Sabre" followed and was dubbed" the mother of all battles" by Saddam Hussein. Schwarzkopf, a master of deception, led Iraq to believe that the Allies were deploying a frontal assault on its armies. The allies moved swiftly and overcame the Iraqis within 100 hours and retook Kuwait. However, the retreating Iraqi forces left burning oil fields, polluted seas and many other unresolved problems in their wake.
