Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO) states that if one member country is attacked, all other members will consider it an attack on themselves and will come to its aid. This includes using armed force if necessary.
How does Article 5 work?

If an armed attack occurs against a NATO member, all other members will assist the attacked member.

The attacked member and the other members will take action to restore and maintain security in the North Atlantic area.
Any armed attack and all measures taken in response will be reported to the Security Council.
Measures will end when the Security Council has taken the necessary steps to restore international peace and security.

Significance of Article 5
Article 5 is considered the cornerstone of NATO, embodying the spirit of "one for all, and all for one". It has only been invoked once in NATO's history, after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks on the United States.
