Exodus 6:3. Did the Patriarchs Know the Divine Name?

A straight-forward reading of Exodus 6:2-3 would indicate that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob did not know the Divine Name. Yet the account of their lives in Genesis shows that they knew the Divine Name, even hearing it from God Himself. The traditional solution to this paradox, while not saying anything untrue, might not be the best explanation. Rather, the best explanation is one which challenges us to reconsider what we think we know about what scripture says in a broader application.
