Solo Public Land Deer Hunt

Randy shares a story of one of his many solo deer hunts, on the Shoshone National Forest. The National Forest is our north neighbor, however this hunt was about 15 miles west of us. This day was a day of heavy snow. It was a good day for the deer being on the move. He harvested a nice buck with his custom 6.5 Gibbs.
With a sever winter and snow event a few weeks before this video was made, the animals are struggling. With around 45” of snow, and, for some time, no wind, nothing was bared off for the wildlife to browse.
Cathy shares, as an overlay, towards the end of the video, a video taken of a buck deer, scraping on rabbit brush, hoping to get rid of his antlers. The video is taken through the living room window.
While the deer hunting was, at the time, still fairly good, it’s gone downhill since, from very harsh winters, to overselling of doe/fawn tags and for lack of wise management, overall.
That is why this hunt stands out for Randy, it was his last good mule deer hunt.
Thumbnail photo is from 12-13 year old buck that wintered very near us for most of his life. This is one of the last, good photos of him that Cathy got, before he died of old age not far from our home, in 2001.
