Popes: Martin V #204, VRP Catholic Media.
Pope Martin V, born Otto Colonna in 1368, was elected pope in 1417, bringing an end to the Western Schism that had divided the Church for nearly four decades. His papacy, which lasted until his death in 1431, is marked by efforts to restore papal authority, strengthen the centralization of the Church, and heal the divisions caused by rival claimants to the papacy. While generally regarded as a stabilizing figure, his papacy faced criticism for failing to adequately address the corruption within the Church and for his involvement in the political struggles of Italian city-states, particularly his family's ambitions.
