UK Parliament|Prime Minister's Questions Highlights – February 26th, 2025
With Keir Starmer visiting Donald Trump this week a flavour of what is going on in our UK Parliament today.
This week's PMQs marked three years since Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and the start of his Special Military Operation.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the UK's unwavering support for Ukraine, announcing an increase in defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by April 2027, to reach 3% in the next Parliament, subject to economic conditions.
He also spoke about his upcoming visit to the US to discuss security partnerships with President Trump.
In domestic news, the government unveiled its plan to launch free breakfast clubs in the first 750 schools, a significant step towards ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive.
The PM also thanked Amanda Pritchard for her dedicated service as Chief Executive of NHS England.
During a heated session, the Prime Minister faced tough questions about the UK’s stance on international relations, especially concerning recent controversial statements from Washington. He was pressed to reaffirm the UK's commitment to supporting Ukraine, collaborating with European allies, upholding international law, and maintaining a substantial role within NATO.
There was criticism of Keir Starmer and the “deal” the Government are trying to make concerning the Chagos Islands.
Key Highlights:
* Sir Keir Starmer vs. Kemi Badenoch: A robust exchange between the Leader of the Opposition and the Leader of the Labour Party.
* Dr. Luke Evans (Conservative): Raised key domestic issues.
* Sir Ed Davey (Liberal Democrats): Questioned cost of living increases and the parlous state of Thames Water.
* Dr. Rosena Allin-Khan (Labour): Criticised the current US administration and Elon Musk.
* Stephen Flynn (SNP): Criticised the Government and Winter Fuel Payments being taken from Pensioners.
* Dr. Kieran Mullan (Conservative): Criticised Government policies.
* John McDonnell (Labour): Questioned the Egyptians, detaining the activist Alaa Abd El-Fattah with his mum being on hunger strike for 150 days.
* Rishi Sunak (Conservative): He has become an ambassador for Prostate Cancer and asked Keir Starmer how the government were going to approach early diagnosis of this cancer.
