Deck Profiles: BRS - PRE Episode 10 | Future and Cofagrigus

Episode 10 of Deck Profiles will be about Future Cofagrigus.

Future is an archetype that has largely gone unnoticed. This is because Future is a pretty complicated archetype to navigate.

Future is a checkmate archetype, which means it's designed to set up a board state where you can't lose and your opponent can't win no matter what line they take. However, it's an advanced type of checkmate where it's much harder to progress your board state than a checkmate archetype like Lost Zone decks, where you can +1 your hand with Comfey, thus making more fast, straightforward strategies more optimal to beat it. So, ultimately, Future's rogue state has largely been built as a result of lack of top players (covering the archetype).

Scarlet and Violet also introduced a style of deck building surrounding Pokemon, rather than having Pokemon just make up your board and being supported by powerful Trainer cards. Alongside Future Pokemon, in Paradox Rift, when Future Pokemon first got printed, Pokemon also printed Cofagrigus ex, a Pokemon that fits that bill of being a Pokemon that you build around. Cofagrigus ex has an expensive attack and an ability with a strict condition, so, like Future Pokemon, is a very advanced ability Pokemon. But if you understand Cofagrigus's role in the Pokemon game, which is a wall, you understand that Cofagrigus ex is a wall as well.

So, combine these two advanced archetypes and you get a devastating checkmate board capable of winning games against the most powerful archetypes, led by the card designed to be the powerhouse of the deck, Iron Jugulis.

That's Future Cofagrigus in a nutshell. Thank you for listening and I hope you continue to support my work.
