Our Scripture reading is Genesis 48-49, in which Jacob, now called Israel, prepares himself and his family for his imminent death.
In this study, Jacob adopts Joseph’s sons as his own and foretells that Reuben and Simeon will be assimilated into the other tribes because of their sins. Joseph’s sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, will assume their roles as two of the twelve tribes of Israel. Genesis 49 closes with Jacob’s death.
