On January 11, 2025, at around 11:00 a.m., Southwest Patrol Division officers responded to a radio call of an ADW stabbing at the 900 block of West 23rd Street. Inside the multi-unit residential treatment facility, a suspect, later identified as Brian Rolstad, a resident of the facility, stabbed a staff member in the face with a folding knife.

As officers approached the location, they met with the victim and witnesses and attempted to ascertain Rolstad’s location. In the interim, additional patrol units arrived and formed a tactical team to callout Rolstad. During the callout, Rolstad emerged from the location and began to advance on the team of officers armed with a knife. The officers gave commands for Rolstad to drop the knife.

He did not comply, resulting in an officer discharging four rounds from a Beanbag Shotgun. The Beanbag rounds were only momentarily effective and Rolstad continued to advance on officers, while still armed with the knife.

As officers attempted to redeploy onto the sidewalk and street, an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) occurred and Rolstad was struck in the chest by gunfire. He immediately dropped to the ground and after a short period, an arrest team approached and took him into custody without further incident.

The victim and Rolstad were transported to a local hospital. Rolstad was pronounced deceased by hospital staff. The victim was treated for his stab wound and discharged.

A black 6-inch folding knife with an approximately 2 1/2-inch blade was located in the roadway where Rolstad collapsed, which was collected as evidence.
