Meet the Children of Loki – The Beasts That Will End the World
In Norse mythology, the gods of Asgard feared three powerful beings above all others—Fenrir, Jörmungandr, and Hel—the monstrous children of Loki, the trickster god. These three offspring were prophesied to bring about the destruction of the gods themselves during Ragnarok, the end of the world.
But who are Loki’s children, and why did Odin and the Aesir gods go to such great lengths to try and control their fate? Were they truly villains, or were they victims of the gods’ own paranoia and cruelty?
In this episode of LEGENDS REIMAGINED, we dive deep into the myths surrounding Fenrir the giant wolf, Jörmungandr the world-serpent, and Hel, the ruler of the underworld. We’ll uncover:
✔️ How Loki fathered three of the most feared beings in Norse mythology
✔️ The prophecy that made Odin and the gods desperate to stop them
✔️ How the gods tried (and failed) to contain Fenrir, Jörmungandr & Hel
✔️ The roles Loki’s children play in Ragnarok, the final battle of the gods

🐺 Fenrir – The Giant Wolf That Will Swallow Odin
Born from Loki and the giantess Angrboda, Fenrir was no ordinary wolf—he was a giant, intelligent, and immensely powerful beast. As he grew, the gods realized he would one day become too strong to control, so Odin ordered him to be bound in chains.
🔺 But Fenrir kept breaking free, growing stronger each time.
🔺 The gods tricked Fenrir into wearing an unbreakable magical chain—Gleipnir.
🔺 But in the process, Fenrir bit off the god Tyr’s hand as a final act of defiance.
At Ragnarok, Fenrir will break his chains, grow to an enormous size, and devour Odin, the All-Father himself. But Odin’s son, Vidar, will seek vengeance, slaying the wolf.
🐍 Jörmungandr – The Serpent That Encircles the World
Jörmungandr, the Midgard Serpent, was so massive that he could wrap around the entire world and bite his own tail. Fearing his power, Odin threw Jörmungandr into the ocean, where he grew into a colossal force of nature.
🔺 Jörmungandr and Thor are fated to be mortal enemies.
🔺 They have fought before, but neither could defeat the other.
🔺 During Ragnarok, Jörmungandr and Thor will battle one last time—Thor will slay the serpent but die shortly after from its venom.
This final duel between the god of thunder and the world serpent is one of the most iconic moments in Norse mythology.
💀 Hel – The Goddess of the Dead & Ruler of the Underworld
Unlike her monstrous brothers, Hel was not a warrior or a beast, but instead, she was sent to rule the underworld. Odin cast her into Niflheim, giving her power over the dead who did not die in battle.
🔺 Hel’s realm was cold, dark, and filled with souls who died from sickness, old age, or misfortune.
🔺 She played a crucial role in Ragnarok, refusing to release Baldur, Odin’s beloved son, from the dead.
🔺 Because of this, some believe she directly helped bring about the gods' downfall.
But was Hel truly evil, or was she simply fulfilling her duty as the ruler of the dead?
⚔️ Ragnarok – The Final Battle of the Gods
According to prophecy, Fenrir, Jörmungandr, and Hel will all play a vital role in Ragnarok, the Norse apocalypse:
🔥 Fenrir will break free and devour Odin.
🔥 Jörmungandr will poison the sky and fight Thor in a final battle.
🔥 Hel’s army of the dead will march against the gods.
🔥 Loki will fight alongside his children, leading the charge against Asgard.
When the dust settles, nearly all the gods will be dead, but a new world will rise from the ashes.
📢 The Truth About Loki’s Children – Were They Truly Evil?
Many modern interpretations depict Fenrir, Jörmungandr, and Hel as villains, but were they really?
🔺 Fenrir only sought freedom, but was bound and betrayed by the gods.
🔺 Jörmungandr was cast away as a child, left to grow in exile.
🔺 Hel was forced into the underworld, separated from her family.
Were they truly destined to destroy the gods, or did the gods create their own downfall by fearing them?
