Farmington, CT - A man was arrested for drunk driving in the wrong direction, hitting a state police cruiser, and other violations.

State police identified the man as 31-year-old Luis Adrian Correa-Cabrera of Hartford.

They said the state’s wrong-way detection system activated on Sunday around 3:20 a.m. It went off in the area of Interstate 84 east at the exit 37 off-ramp in Farmington.

State police said they were able to confirm that the driver of a dark-colored SUV got on the highway through the off-ramp and went westbound in the eastbound lanes.

Troopers found the vehicle, a black Volvo XC90.

“As a trooper attempted to stop the wrong-way driver, who had initially been traveling at slow speeds, the suspect vehicle struck the trooper’s cruiser and continued driving past them at a high rate of speed,” state police said in their arrest report. “The cruiser sustained minor damage, and the trooper was uninjured as a result of the collision.”

Responding troopers then saw the driver exit the highway at exit 32 in Southington, where they were able to successfully stop him.

The driver and sole occupant initially refused to comply with troopers' commands and was quickly escorted out of the vehicle.

The driver was identified as Correa-Cabrera.

“Correa-Cabrera admitted to consuming alcohol prior to driving and was unaware that he had crashed into a state police cruiser, or that he had travelled the wrong way on the highway,” state police said.

Further investigation revealed that the vehicle Correa-Cabrera was driving was not registered or insured, and had a registration plate attached that did not belong to that vehicle.

Troopers said Correa-Cabrera was also found to not have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle.

He was charged with operating an unregistered motor vehicle, improper use of registration, operating a motor vehicle without minimum insurance, reckless driving, evading responsibility of a motor vehicle collision, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, driving the wrong way, improper entry to a highway, operating a motor vehicle without a license, and first-degree reckless endangerment.

Correa-Cabrera was held on a $100,000 bond and scheduled to appear at New Britain Superior Court Monday.
