'A Burnt-Out Case' (1960) by Graham Greene
'A Burnt-Out Case' follows Mister Querry, a disillusioned and world-weary architect who abandons his former life and retreats to a remote leper colony in the Congo. Seeking anonymity and escape from modern civilization, he becomes involved with the colony's doctors and patients, including those suffering from burnt-out cases—lepers who, though physically cured, are left with severe disfigurements.
As Querry tries to lead a quiet, detached existence, his past catches up with him. A journalist named Rycker mistakes his withdrawal for spiritual redemption and publicizes his story, drawing unwanted attention. Meanwhile, his interactions with Doctor Colin, the dedicated yet skeptical head of the colony, and Marie Rycker, the lonely and unhappy wife of the journalist, lead to unintended consequences.
When Marie falsely claims Querry is the father of her unborn child, tensions escalate. The misunderstanding fuels jealousy and resentment, culminating in Querry’s tragic murder at the hands of her husband. His death serves as a grim irony—Querry, who sought only obscurity, is ultimately thrust back into the spotlight, misunderstood in both life and death.
Themes
Disillusionment & Faith – Querry represents the existential crisis of a man who has lost faith in both religion and human purpose.
Isolation & Redemption – The leper colony acts as a metaphor for detachment, where some seek healing while others (like Querry) reject any notion of salvation.
Western Influence versus African Reality – Greene critiques European intrusion in Africa, highlighting misunderstandings and moral dilemmas.
The Burden of Public Perception – The novel explores how others project meaning onto individuals, whether or not they seek it.
Style and Influence
Greene’s signature "Catholic novel" themes are present, though Querry resists easy classification as a religious figure. The novel is meditative, restrained, and rich with moral ambiguity, akin to 'The Heart of the Matter' or 'The Power and the Glory'.
