Popes: Callixtus III #207, Papal History.
Pope Callixtus III, born Alfons de Borja in 1378 in Valencia, Spain, was elected pope in 1455. His papacy is noted for his efforts to strengthen the Catholic faith during a turbulent time, including promoting the crusade against the Ottoman Empire and issuing a papal bull to call for military support at the Battle of Belgrade in 1456. However, his papacy was also marked by controversy, notably his nepotism in elevating his relatives, such as making his nephew, Rodrigo Borgia (later Pope Alexander VI), a cardinal, which drew criticism for undermining the integrity of the papacy.
