Akron, OH - 39-year-old Marcus Leonard Smith was shot and killed by Akron Police following a traffic stop on Monday, February 17.

Police say he stole a gun and a car and ended up in Akron, where he was born.

Newly released police body camera video shows the deadly encounter as gunfire is exchanged between Smith and Akron Police officers.

In the video, you repeatedly hear Akron officers yelling for Smith to drop the gun, then it appears Smith takes off running as patrol officers are in pursuit. This all happened on Ira Avenue in Akron just before 9 a.m. last Monday.

Smith who was injured by the gunfire fell onto the snow that covered the street and before officers could render first aid they pulled Smith away from the gun that police say was in his hand.

Smith was visiting from Cincinnati when police spotted the vehicle in Akron. They also received a 911 call from Smith’s father, who alerted them that he appeared to be having mental health issues before taking his father’s car.

Police say, Smith opened fire on them after the stop and they returned fire.

His family spoke to only one station about the hurt and the loss of a young man who was studying for his PhD.

They also say he was struggling with some mental health issues for which he sought treatment. His mother Beverly Ivory is traumatized by his death.

“The person that they saw Monday is not Marcus Smith. That is real, this mental illness. That was I want to relay, get help, and seek help for your loved ones.”
