Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories, Canada is home to a magnificent snow castle that draws thousands of tourists to the extreme north. The history of the castle is fascinating. It began twenty years ago as the winter play castle that Anthony Foliot built for his own kids. It was so popular among the local people that he built a new castle each winter, expanding and improving it with each year.
Now, a full fifty employees work tirelessly to build a magnificent castle that resembles a small village on the bay in Yellowknife on Great Slave Lake, the 8th largest lake in the world.
The castle consists of many rooms, tunnels, hallways, and a grand concert hall. There are snow slides, a cafe, a gift shop and visitor centre, and outdoor courtyard. The castle is adorned with ornately carved windows and balconies, pillars, archways, and ice sculptures. The castle even has huge ice slides and an ice dragon at the entrance.
The castle, and the crew, turn Yellowknife into a winter kingdom each year. Tours take place in February and the castle is open for tourism throughout March. These Canadian tourists took the tour of the castle as it was partially completed, giving an inside look at the construction that is behind the magic.
Yellowknife is a beautiful and thrilling destination that brings people from all over the world. The snow castle is one more reason to visit Yellowknife.
