On January 28, 2025, an officer-involved shooting occurred in downtown San Diego near the Santa Fe Depot, resulting in the death of a 16-year-old boy. The incident began when San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Officer Daniel Gold responded to reports of gunfire at the historic Kettner Boulevard train station shortly before 9 p.m. Gold had arrived in the area on an unrelated call when a fellow officer reported hearing shots fired.

Surveillance footage captured the events leading up to the shooting. It showed the teenager walking on a boarding platform toward two other youths. One of them suddenly drew a firearm and fired at least two shots at the boy, who then fled south and then east through an open-air corridor at the depot. As the teen emerged onto a sidewalk on the east side of the station, he encountered Officer Gold, who had approached the walkway from the north with his weapon drawn and body camera activated. Gold fired at close range, fatally wounding the boy.

The victim was later identified by his family as Konoa Steven Wilson, a student at Bayside Community School in Logan Heights. His father, Steven Wilson, described him as a leader who had never been in trouble before, expressing confusion and disbelief over the incident. There is no indication that Konoa fired a weapon during the encounter or was holding one when Gold shot him.

On February 6, 2025, police arrested another 16-year-old suspect linked to the initial gunfire that preceded the police shooting, though his identity remains confidential due to his minor status.
