San Jose release surveillance video of suspects shooting at San Jose officers, arrested days later

San Jose, CA - Four men in the South Bay were arrested in connection to a drive-by shooting last week where two plainclothes officers were fired upon, the San Jose Police Department announced Tuesday.

On the night of Jan. 20, two plainclothes officers assigned to the SJPD Special Operations Division were at a stop light at the intersection of McLaughlin Avenue and McLaughlin Court in an unmarked police vehicle. Four unknown men in a vehicle confronted the officers at the light, police said, and indicated that they were armed.

After pulling out of the intersection, the officers parked along Melbourne Boulevard and McLaughlin Avenue to radio for uniformed officers to respond, according to SJPD. At the same time, the suspect vehicle made a U-turn and reapproached the officers.

At least one of the suspects opened fire at the officers, police said, and bullets struck the police vehicle multiple times. One officer returned gunfire at the suspects as the suspect vehicle fled the scene at a high rate of speed, according to authorities.

Neither of the officers were injured in the shootout.

The SJPD Homicide Unit responded to begin an investigation. Detectives “quickly identified a possible suspect vehicle and developed several leads,” police said.

Detectives identified four suspects on Jan. 23 in connection to the shooting:

* Edward Ruiz, 21, of San Jose
* Gabriel Olmos, 21, of Santa Clara
* Emilio Macias, 22, of San Jose
* Robert Cesena, 37, of San Jose

Arrest and search warrants were obtained for all four suspects. Olmos was arrested in Merced, Cesena was arrested in San Jose and Macias was arrested in San Francisco. Two days later, Ruiz was arrested in Gilroy.

All four suspects were booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on multiple charges, including attempted murder.

Police said Tuesday that the suspects would not have known that they were firing upon police officers, but believe the shooting was gang-motivated.
