Popes: Pius II #208, Papal History.
Pope Pius II, born Enea Silvio Piccolomini in 1405, was a distinguished scholar, diplomat, and humanist before becoming pope in 1458. His papacy is most noted for his efforts to strengthen the Church’s influence in Europe, particularly through his call for a Crusade to reclaim Constantinople, which ultimately failed. Although his reign was largely marked by reform and a commitment to ecclesiastical unity, his earlier involvement in secular politics, including his support for the controversial Council of Basel, was a source of contention among traditional Catholics who saw his shift from conciliarism to papal authority as a critical moment in Church history.
