politically charged atmosphere of Carthage, a city deeply divided between the Barcine party, led by the kin of the revered Hamilcar Barca, and the faction helmed by Hanno the Rich. The Barcines champion sweeping reforms, justice, and renewed vigor in the conflict with Rome, aiming to alleviate the burden on subjugated nations. Conversely, Hanno’s faction, backed by wealth and influence within the senate and judiciary, thrives on corruption and the status quo. Hamilcar’s military successes in Spain temporarily bolster the Barcines, but his death is a severe blow, mitigated only by Hasdrubal’s subsequent leadership and victories. However, Hasdrubal’s assassination throws the city into turmoil, sparking a fierce debate over the succession. The army in Spain proclaims young Hannibal as their general, a choice vehemently opposed by Hanno, who fears Hannibal’s talent and the threat he poses to his power. Hamilcar, recently returned from a successful campaign, finds himself thrust into the center of this crisis, tasked with securing the senate’s ratification of Hannibal’s appointment. A clandestine meeting of the Barcine Syssite (club) ensues, where the decision is made to retain Hannibal in command. Hamilcar dispatches various members to rally support, focusing on stirring the populace and swaying the middle class, who are susceptible to Hanno’s bribery and promises of tax relief. Malchus, Hamilcar’s son, is assigned the task of galvanizing the sailors and fishermen, emphasizing the threat posed by Rome and the potential loss of trade if Hannibal is not appointed. He successfully enlists the support of influential figures within the maritime community, promising financial rewards and igniting a popular movement in favor of Hannibal, setting the stage for a showdown between the opposing factions.
