St. Louis, MO - St. Louis County police are releasing new video of an officer-involved shooting and use of force incident that shut down West Florissant Avenue for more than six hours last month.
According to police, around 9:45 on the morning of January 13, cameras at the intersection of West Florissant Avenue and Lucas and Hunt Road captured a car running a red light, hitting another car and crashing into a snow bank. The driver, who police identified as Durrell Dorn, 37, is then seen on camera exiting his car and walking north on West Florissant.
Surveillance video from down the street captures traffic crawling as Dorn walks on the shoulder of the road with a pistol in his right hand. The camera captures Dorn fire the gun into the air multiple times as he continues to the intersection of West Florissant and Ferguson Street.
On Thursday, St. Louis County police released dash camera video and body camera video of two responding officers. In both videos, an officer is seen exiting his squad car and confronting Dorn, ordering him to drop his gun. Dorn is then seen turning and shoots at the officer, who returns fire. Both Dorn and the officer begin running down West Florissant. When the officer gets to the intersection of West Florissant and Ferguson, he fires several shots as Dorn runs further down the street.
Body camera video from the second responding officer also shows him fire multiple times at Dorn as he continues running.
Both officers are then seen getting into a squad car and can be heard telling dispatch they are going to hit Dorn with the squad car. Moments later, body camera video captures the moment of impact, before the cruiser comes to a rest in the snow off of the road.
Police also released a still image the department says shows Dorn’s gun leaving his hand and flying through the air when he’s hit by the squad car.
Both officers are seen getting out of the car and placing Dorn in handcuffs while on the ground. The department said despite life-saving efforts performed on the scene, Dorn later died at the hospital.
St. Louis County police said officers found Dorn’s gun at the scene with an extended magazine. Ballistic evidence shows the gun was fired at least 10 times, according to investigators, who discovered nine fired casings at the scene matching Dorn’s gun. One casing was never found.
The department said the two officers involved fired a total of 16 rounds. One officer suffered a hand injury and was treated on scene.
Both officers involved in the incident are no longer on leave and have returned to the Division of Patrol, according to a department spokesperson.
