Terrifying Moment: Dodgers Pitcher Takes 106-MPH Line Drive to the Head During Spring Training
A frightening moment occurred during the very first spring training game of the year when Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Bobby Miller took a 106-mph line drive off his head.
Miller, making his 2025 spring debut, had almost no time to react after throwing an 80-mph breaking ball that was rocketed straight back at him by Chicago Cubs hitter Michael Busch. The impact sent shockwaves through the stadium, with Busch and Miller’s teammates watching in disbelief as the ball ricocheted toward first base, ultimately resulting in an RBI single that put the Cubs on the board.
Despite the terrifying nature of the incident, Miller was able to walk off the field under his own power, earning a well-deserved ovation from the crowd.
Miller was originally selected by the Dodgers in the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft and made his major league debut three years later. His rookie campaign was promising, as he posted a 3.76 ERA across 22 starts. However, his sophomore season in 2024 proved more challenging. The 25-year-old struggled with consistency, bouncing between the majors and minors while posting an 8.52 ERA in 13 major league starts. His season was further hampered by a stint on the injured list due to shoulder inflammation.
One can imagine Miller’s eagerness to put the difficulties of 2024 behind him and start fresh in 2025. However, after this unsettling incident, he may have to wait a bit longer before doing so.
The Dodgers largely avoided such injury scares last season, though there was a close call when Yoshinobu Yamamoto astonishingly caught a 105-mph comebacker during his first season with the team. Yamamoto had just begun a historic $325 million contract, the largest ever given to a pitcher.
Los Angeles is coming off their second World Series victory since 2020 and has bolstered its roster significantly by adding stars like Blake Snell, Kirby Yates, and Roki Sasaki. As the team gears up for another championship run, they’ll certainly be hoping for a swift and full recovery for Miller after this harrowing spring training moment.
