Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani (1312–1385 CE) was a revered Sufi saint, scholar, and preacher of the Kubrawiya order who played a crucial role in the spread of Islam in Kashmir. His influence extended beyond spiritual teachings to social, economic, and political reforms in the region. Due to his significant contributions, he is widely known as "Shah-e-Hamadan" (King of Hamadan). This essay delves into his early life, travels, impact on Kashmir, and lasting legacy.
Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani was born in 1312 CE in Hamadan, a city in present-day Iran. He belonged to a distinguished lineage of Sayyids, tracing his ancestry back to Prophet Muhammad. His father, Sayyid Shihab-ud-Din, was a respected scholar and Sufi, which greatly influenced Hamadani's inclination towards spirituality.
From an early age, he pursued rigorous Islamic education, studying Quranic exegesis (Tafsir), Hadith, jurisprudence (Fiqh), philosophy, and mysticism. He became a disciple of Sheikh Sharafuddin Muzzaffari, a leading Sufi master of the Kubrawiya order, which was founded by Najmuddin Kubra. Hamadani’s deep spiritual insight and scholarly aptitude earned him recognition as a major exponent of the Kubrawiya Sufi tradition.
Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani traveled extensively across Central Asia, Persia, and the Indian subcontinent, spreading the message of Islam and Sufism. His journeys took him to regions such as Khorasan, Transoxiana, and eventually Kashmir. During his travels, he was accompanied by hundreds of disciples, scholars, and artisans, who collectively enriched the cultural and intellectual landscape of the areas they visited.
In the 14th century, Hamadani arrived in Kashmir, a region that was undergoing significant socio-political transformation. At the time, Kashmir was ruled by Sultan Shihab-ud-Din and later Sultan Qutub-ud-Din. Although Buddhism and Hinduism had been prevalent in the region, there was a growing curiosity about Islamic teachings. Hamadani’s arrival marked a turning point in the spiritual and cultural history of Kashmir.
Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani’s role in spreading Islam in Kashmir was multidimensional. He not only preached the principles of Islamic monotheism but also introduced various socio-economic and cultural reforms.
Hamadani’s approach to spreading Islam was deeply rooted in Sufi principles of love, compassion, and spiritual enlightenment. He emphasized the oneness of God (Tawhid) and the importance of righteousness in personal and communal life. His teachings attracted large numbers of followers, including local rulers, nobles, and common people.
He compiled several important Islamic works, including "Zakhirat-ul-Muluk" (Treasure for Kings), a guide for rulers on governance based on Islamic ethics. His spiritual discourses were simple yet profound, making Islamic teachings accessible to the people of Kashmir.
One of Hamadani’s significant contributions was the introduction of Persian and Central Asian crafts and trades to Kashmir. He brought skilled artisans, weavers, calligraphers, and scholars, who transformed the local economy. The Kashmiri handicraft industry, particularly the famed Pashmina wool weaving, owes its origins to Hamadani’s influence.
Moreover, he encouraged the establishment of Khanqahs (Sufi lodges) and Madrasas (Islamic schools) that served as centers for spiritual and intellectual growth. He also advocated for social justice and urged rulers to ensure the well-being of their subjects.
Hamadani maintained close ties with Kashmiri rulers, providing them with ethical and religious guidance. His work "Zakhirat-ul-Muluk" was a comprehensive treatise on statecraft, emphasizing justice, compassion, and governance based on Islamic principles. His influence ensured that the rulers of Kashmir adopted policies that were more inclusive and welfare-oriented.

"Awrad-e-Fathiya" – A compilation of supplications and prayers that remains popular in Kashmir.
His writings reflect his deep understanding of spirituality, governance, and social justice, leaving a lasting intellectual legacy.
Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani passed away in 1385 CE in Kunar, present-day Afghanistan, during one of his travels. His body was later transferred and buried in Kulob, Tajikistan, where his shrine continues to attract devotees.
In Kashmir, his legacy endures through the Khanqah-e-Moula, a historic Sufi lodge in Srinagar, where his teachings continue to inspire generations. The impact of his religious and socio-economic reforms remains evident in Kashmir’s Islamic and cultural fabric.
