In this episode, we examine the reaction of Russian media and scientists to a viral warning from Dr. Egon Cholakian, a representative of the ALLATRA International Public Movement. Dr. Cholakian raised concerns about a potential breakthrough of a magmatic plume beneath Siberia. Obvious signs of a threat include permafrost melting, increased seismic activity, cryovolcanic explosions, and even reports of boiling well water in local communities. Dr. Cholakian proposed controlled degassing as a way to release the pressure from the plume to avoid catastrophe.
However, Russian media shared statements by such scientists as Alexei Zavialov and Nina Zaytseva, who did not comment on facts presented in Dr. Cholakian’s address, but instead engaged in personal attacks. Such statements along with reassuring the public that there is no cause for concern and encouraging them to “focus on raising children rather than worrying about the climate” can be explained by the recent statement by volcanologist Pavel Plechov, who told in a recent interview that there is an order in Russia “not to tell anything that can raise panic among the population.”
Despite the media campaign, local residents in Siberia who observe these alarming and anomalous phenomena firsthand share Dr. Cholakian’s address on social media confirming that what he says is true. People say that dismissing such warnings out of fear of causing panic is irresponsible and short-sighted. As events unfold, those who downplayed the risks may eventually be held accountable.
