If a plane’s speed is higher than the speed of sound, the aircraft can sometimes push the sound waves ahead of it. This causes the sound waves to accumulate and then it’s just a matter of time before the jet breaks through the sound waves which triggers an intense shift in the pressure, and that is what causes a sonic boom.
