Russia and Sudan have revived a 2020 military deal. Sudan will allow Russia to build a naval base in the Red Sea. The deal comes at an excellent time for Moscow. Russia has one naval base in West Asia which is under threat. The Tartus base in Syria. Syria's new leaders aren't happy with Moscow over its support of ousted President Bashar Al-Assad. So the Tartus base's future is uncertain. However, a naval base in Sudan would allow Russia to keep exerting its influence in nearby West Asia, and in Africa to boot.
