Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is the fourth installment in the Mario Kart series, released exclusively for the Nintendo GameCube in 2003. It introduced a unique gameplay mechanic where two characters ride a single kart, allowing players to switch between a driver and an item thrower during races. This cooperative playstyle added a new layer of strategy, especially in multiplayer mode, where two players could team up—one handling the driving while the other controlled items. The game featured a diverse roster of characters, each with unique special items, and a selection of custom karts with varying stats, making character and kart selection more tactical than in previous entries.

With 16 new tracks spread across the Mushroom, Flower, Star, and Special Cups, Double Dash!! delivered some of the most memorable courses in the series, including Dino Dino Jungle, DK Mountain, and the chaotic Baby Park. The game also featured Battle Mode, Time Trials, and the innovative LAN mode, which allowed up to 16 players to compete using multiple consoles. While some fans found the handling slightly different from previous titles, Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is still regarded as one of the most innovative and fun entries in the franchise, thanks to its fast-paced action, cooperative gameplay, and iconic track design.
