How Too Much Salt Weakens Your Bones | The Hidden Link Between Sodium & Calcium Loss.

Normally, When we consume calcium through dairy products, leafy greens, nuts, or fortified foods, our intestines absorb it with the help of vitamin D. Once absorbed, calcium enters the bloodstream, where it is either used for immediate functions or stored in the bones.

Our kidneys play a key role in maintaining calcium balance. They filter calcium from the blood and determine how much should be excreted in the urine and how much should be reabsorbed back into the bloodstream But When we consume too much salt, our kidneys prioritize eliminating the excess sodium. Since sodium and calcium share common transport mechanisms in the kidneys, an increase in sodium excretion also leads to higher calcium loss through urine. As more calcium is flushed out, the body is forced to compensate by pulling calcium from bones to maintain stable blood calcium levels.

Over time, this continuous depletion weakens bone density, making bones more porous and brittle, which increases the risk of fractures and osteoporosis.
