He seems to have no idea the Venona Papers proved McCarthy right 20 years before this came out, Soviet spies infested the FDR admin and USG. But Connoly would say the same group controls both sides, and he'd be right:

That raises some larger questions about what McCarthy was doing. I read that he was genuine but blackmailed by Hoover over alcoholism and adultery, and Hoover by Lansky over the gay parties with Ray Cohn and Lewis Rosenstiel, and that Lansky's team thereby was able to control who McCarthy did and didn't accuse.
