Popes: Innocent VIII #211, Papal History.
Pope Innocent VIII, born Giovanni Battista Cibo in 1432, was elected pope in 1484 and served until his death in 1492. He is often remembered for his involvement in the witch hunts of the late 15th century, notably authorizing the papal bull Summis Desiderantes, which allowed inquisitors to pursue suspected witches with greater authority. While his papacy is marked by efforts to strengthen the Papal States and his support for the arts, it was also controversial due to his lax personal morality and the political maneuvering within the papacy during his reign.
