Romans 16:18 For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the un-suspecting.

These people are driven by self-interest and self-gratification, often seen in their pretentious, extravagant, and immoral lifestyles.

2 Timothy 3:8 And just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected as regards the faith.

2 Peter 2:1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.

2 Corinthians 11:13-15 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14) And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15) Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their deeds.

In every group there seems to be those intent on bringing it down. Paul urged his Christian friends at Rome to be on the watch for those who stirred up dissensions. Paul instructed a young preacher to have nothing to do with a divisive person

There is considerable difficulty in determining just who these trouble makers were. They have been variously identified as Judaizers, antinomians, charismatic enthusiasts, or the selfish among the strong.
