Young Teddy “Rocket” Ruquette, lives on the shore of the Great Lakes surrounded by beauty and an endless variety of fun. Yet he and his band of friends dream of being treasure hunting pirates. Following a story from an old sailor:
“Do you know there is probably more gold on the bottom of these Great Lakes than in the old Spanish Main?”
“Really?” the boys responded, transfixed again.
“Yes, gold, mostly specie left by poor immigrants who drowned in sinking ships as they traveled inland on these lakes a hundred years ago.”
The merriment of a search for gold turns into a desperate struggle to survive the ruthless storms reality. Excitement over the hunt fades under a cloud of fear. Pursued by a determined brute of a man they fall into twisting situations they cannot control.
Rocket’s reluctant association with Sally, a disheveled, know-it-all, tomboy helps him weather the tide of adventures. He suffers the awkward struggle of coming of age, of stumbling through relationships.
“You’re just dumber than dirt when it comes to girls, aren’t you?” Sally said to Rocket.
“What do you mean?” he asked puzzled.
“She likes you, ya big dummy, and she was looking for an excuse to hang around with you. And you acted like that was a big problem.”
“I did?”
Together they experience the frightening reality of being a Pirate of Shipbuilders Creek in their search for real treasure.
