The subsidies that Republican representatives divvied out to politically well-connected corporations added up to what would be billions of dollars in today’s money, and it often went to corrupt contractors who would overcharge for their services and sometimes not complete projects at all. This period was the origin of the marriage between corporation and state in America, and subsequently the encumbrance which corporate influence is in American politics today. The progenitor of this type of institutional corporate cronyism was the Republican Party, and in 1860 it selected Abraham Lincoln as its leader.
