Miniature railroad for Detroit Zoo in 1956
1 month ago
17
In 1956, the Detroit Zoo introduced a miniature railroad, which became a beloved attraction for visitors. The train was built and donated by the Chrysler Corporation in memory of the company's founder, Walter P. Chrysler, and in tribute to two prominent Detroiters, William E. Scripps and Walter O. Briggs. The miniature railroad consists of two complete trains of six coaches each and one standby2.
The Tauber Family Railroad, as it is known, offers a relaxing one-way ride through the zoo, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenic views and make magnificent memories. The locomotives were refurbished in the 1980s and again in 2008, ensuring that the train remains a cherished part of the zoo experience.
