Police officers in Michigan jumped into action to rescue a dog that broke through the ice on a canal this week and couldn't get out.

The Trenton Police Department, in Wayne County, posted a video on social media showing the bravery of the two police officers who responded to the scene.

Both officers entered the ice-covered canal in the city's Elizabeth Park to help the trapped pooch.

The two officers were able to reach the struggling dog and help it get to shore, before reuniting the dog with its owner.

The Trenton Police Department said if you see a person or animal in distress in freezing water, call 911 and avoid putting yourself at risk by attempting a rescue.
