North Las Vegas police shared body camera video from fallen officer Jason Roscow when he responded to an armed suspect.

Police held a media briefing Wednesday morning on the Feb. 4 shooting. It happened near Camino Al Norte and Lone Mountain Road. The suspect was identified as Alexander Mathis, 25.

Investigation revealed that Mathis fired five rounds toward Roscow with a 9mm handgun. The officer would die at UMC from multiple gunshot wounds.

Roscow was armed with a 9mm handgun. He fired 16 rounds at Mathis. The suspect died from a single gunshot wound.

A second officer was identified in the shooting, Luis Macias-Venegas. Body camera video shows him arriving in a patrol vehicle during the shootout on Misty View Court. He fired one round.

Before the shooting, two 911 calls came in reporting someone walking in the area with a gun, throwing rocks at cars and breaking windows. The suspect was identified as Mathis.

Roscow was the first arriving officer. Mathis was located on High Creek Drive but he immediately fled northbound. He would jump through a backyard and later appear on Misty View Court, where the shooting occurred.

Hyde said Roscow was in uniform and had his lights on when giving commands for Mathis to show his hands.

“It left no doubt that commands were coming from a police officer,” he said.

Hyde said Mathis continued to approach Roscow aggressively during the shooting. A photo from Roscow’s body worn camera shows the suspect hovering over him.

At this moment, a second officer arrived at the scene, Luis Macias-Venegas. He was armed with a 9mm handgun and fired one round toward the suspect.

If Mathis survived, police said he would have faced the following charges:

* Murder of a police officer
* Assault with a deadly weapon
* Discharging firearm where people may be endangered
* Attempting to lure police officer
* Destruction of property
* Resisting an officer with a deadly weapon
* Reckless endangerment

Police said he had prior charges in 2019 that involved concealing a weapon without a permit, false statement to a police officer and petty larceny.
