"Literature as Uncertainty Practice – Creative Encounters with the World"
Karin Kukkonen

With: Bruno Viandrola (Kiel) and Federico Pianzola (Groningen)

Environments are more and more perceived as volatile. A world in crisis is not stable enough for us to
learn from prediction errors and devise new, reliable protocols to deal with the unexpected (see
Miller et al. 2023). Literature, however, continually plunges its readers into such volatile
environments, by providing a designed sensory flow or «probability design» (Kukkonen 2020). In this
talk, I will discuss how the form or composition in a narrative guides readers’ attention through
contingent events, while keeping them immersed at the same time.
I will then develop suggestions for how the experimentation and play of literary narratives shapes
volatile designer environments that invite and enable creative encounters with the world.
