Mar. 13, 1965 - President Johnson warned Gov. George Wallace of Alabama during a three-hour White House meeting today that the Federal government was prepared to utilize its full powers to protect the rights of Negroes to vote and demonstrate in Alabama.
At the end of the meeting, Johnson led the Governor through some 200 newsmen to an area outside the White House where the President spoke about the meeting. He then let Wallace make a brief statement over the din of about 1,500 civil rights demonstrators who marched laong Pennsylvania Ave., chanting: “Gov. Wallace must go.”
The Governor said he found the conference with Johnson frank, forthright, and friendly. “I do hope we can come to a solution of our problems,” Wallace said. “I hope we can have a cessation of demonstrations.”
