From Coralie Fargeat, the director behind Revenge, comes The Substance, a sci-fi body horror that won Best Screenplay at Cannes and is now crawling its way into cinemas. Starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, this sinister satire takes a sharp, disturbing look at the beauty industry, Hollywood, and ageism through the lens of a product known only as "The Substance."

The Substance is an injectable solution that allows you to "generate another you" with whom you must share your time. But, of course, things aren’t as simple as they seem. The film uses this premise to explore the consequences of this invention, combining body horror with a critique of our societal obsessions with youth, beauty, and self-image.

While The Substance is visceral in parts, and features strong performances, particularly from Demi Moore in what’s described as a career-best role, the film’s satirical tone sometimes feels more like a series of mild jabs than a full-throated deconstruction of the cultural gaze on beauty and sexuality. It revels in its excess without always meaningfully subverting it, making for a complex but intriguing watch.

Starring: Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, Dennis Quaid, Hugo Diego Garcia, Joseph Balderrama, Oscar Lesage.
