At its hottest the Earth's average temperature reached 96.8 degrees Fahrenheit (36 degrees Celsius) -- far higher than the recent historic 58.96 F (14.98 C) in humanity's existence. The timeline illustrates how swift and dramatic temperature shifts were associated with many of the world's worst moments -- including a mass extinction 251 MYA that wiped out roughly 90 percent of all species and the asteroid strike 65 MYA that killed the dinosaurs. The timeline encompasses almost all of the Phanerozoic -- the geologic eon that began with the emergence of multicellular, non-microscopic organisms and continues today. It portrays a global climate that was more dynamic and extreme than researchers had imagined and, in keeping with decades of past research on climate, the chart hews closely to estimates of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, with temperatures rising in proportion to concentrations of the heat-trapping gas. The study also makes clear that the conditions humans are accustomed to are quite different from those that have dominated our planet's history. For most of the Phanerozoic, the research suggests, average temperatures have exceeded 71.6 F (22 C), with little or no ice at the poles. Coldhouse climates -- including our current one -- prevailed just 13 percent of the time. One of the more sobering revelations of the research is that life on Earth has endured climates far hotter than the one people are now creating through planet-warming emissions. But humans evolved during the coldest epoch of the Phanerozoic, when global average temperatures were as low as 51.8 F (11 C). The new temperature timeline raises questions as well as answers, though it is considered more accurate than other estimates. The timeline was assembled through a technique called data assimilation, which combines real-world evidence from 150,000 oceanic data points with climate models to yield more rigorous and accurate results. But it's also possible that the data assimilation assumes too much warming and is missing factors that might forestall a runaway greenhouse effect. For the billions of people who are now living through the hottest years ever recorded -- and facing a hotter future still -- the timeline should serve as a wake-up call. Even under the worst-case scenarios, human-caused warming will not push the Earth beyond the bounds of habitability. But it will create conditions unlike anything seen in the 300,000 years our species has existed -- conditions that could wreak havoc through ecosystems and communities. As Emily Judd, a researcher at University of Arizona and the Smithsonian specializing in ancient climates and the lead author of the study said, "As long as one or two organisms survive, there will always be life. I'm not concerned about that. My concern is what human life looks like. What it means to survive."

Beyond his well-documented anti-vaccine views and advocacy, the letter cites other conspiracy theories Kennedy has actively spread, including baseless claims about a link between school shootings and antidepressants and his promotion of disproven treatments for Covid-19. "This appointment is a slap in the face to every health care professional who has spent their lives working to protect patients from preventable illness and death," the letter says. The letter and a corresponding campaign urging health care professionals to contact their senators and the American Medical Association are just the latest responses from physicians and public health advocates to Kennedy's controversial selection. On Friday, in an interview with Bari Weiss for Honestly, Johnson shared an anecdote that demonstrated just how checked out the outgoing president has been. During the third week of January 2024, Johnson was invited to a meeting at the Oval Office with several of Biden’s top national security advisers and cabinet chiefs. The ostensible purpose of the meeting was to persuade Johnson to support the latest aid package for Ukraine (which he ended up doing). But Johnson also wanted to talk with the president about a recent executive order that paused the approval of new permits to export American liquefied natural gas (LNG) to our European allies—an important issue for his Louisiana constituents. In the course of a one-on-one with Biden, Johnson learned the president was unaware of his own executive order. The outlines of this anecdote were previously reported by The Wall Street Journal, but the Journal relied on anonymous sources. On Friday, Johnson put the tale on the record. “Can I ask you a question? I cannot answer this from my constituents in Louisiana,” Johnson recalled telling Biden. “Sir, why did you pause LNG exports to Europe? Liquefied natural gas is in great demand by our allies. Why would you do that? Cause you understand we just talked about Ukraine, you understand you are fueling Vladimir Putin’s war machine, because they gotta get their gas from him.” Biden, according to Johnson, was stunned. “I didn’t do that,” Biden said. Johnson responded, “Mr. President, yes you did. It was an executive order like three weeks ago.” Biden continued to deny that he paused the LNG exports. At that point, Johnson suggested that the president ask the president’s secretary to print out the executive order, so the two could read it together. Biden then recalled that he had signed an executive order, but it only called for a study on the effects of LNG. Johnson was firm. “Sir, you paused it, I know. I have the export terminals in my state. I talked to those people in my state, I’ve talked to those people this morning, this is doing massive damage to our economy, national security.” In this exchange, Johnson said he realized that Biden was not lying to him. “He genuinely did not know what he had signed,” Johnson said. “And I walked out of that meeting with fear and loathing because I thought, “We are in serious trouble—who is running the country?” Like, I don't know who put the paper in front of him, but he didn’t know.” Johnson said in a follow-up answer that he did not know who was really running the country. His theory is that Biden agreed to place more leftist progressives in key positions in exchange for his primary rivals dropping out of the race. And again, I don't take my word for it. Go to the FDA website." "We just did it for the hepatitis B vaccine. Pull it up for every single other childhood vaccine. Look at section 6.1. They also have the underlying clinical trial reports for a lot of them. Take a look at it. I will tell you, I can't claim to have any genius superpowers as a person or a lawyer to have done this. I literally just went to Google and I searched FDA licensed vaccines and you can pull them up and it's right there for the taking. But it's true." "Most people will just, it's almost like an incantation, safe and effective, safe and effective. The most robustly studied products in the market, the most safely studied, their safety review for years. You know, and the crazy part is this. We just looked at the clinical trials, right? And so when I do this and we could go through all the vaccines just like this, and it gets worse and worse." "You remember that Prevnar vaccine we looked at that at six months of safety review? So you're like, hey, all right, at least we got six months. So what would that show? You want to take a look at that one? It's pretty interesting if you want to open it up a second. Yeah, I'll share my screen one more time and I'll pop it up on the screen and we could take a look at it." "But I think it's very telling. Here is Prevnar 13, OK? This is the package insert, all right? And we are now in section 6.1. And here you have the section with serious adverse events. So this is what you really want to focus on, right? Because serious adverse events means something very serious. It's a defined term by the FDA. We could even go to the FDA website again." "You know, we can do serious. adverse events, FDA. And right here you could see it means death, life threatening, hospitalizability, congenital abnormality, required interventions to prevent permanent impairment, and then other serious, which effectively has to have one or the other. So serious adverse event is a very serious condition." "So let's go back to Prevnar 13. Now in this clinical trial, this is one of the top five selling products, right? You've got six months of safety review. Finally, so maybe We'll see what that shows. And here, I'm gonna highlight the sentence, and here's what they found. And remember, the kids in this trial, the babies and infants and toddlers were healthy. They don't let really sick kids in." "So you have completely typically healthy children, healthy, get the product trapped for six months. And here's what they found. Serious adverse events reported following vaccination infants and toddlers occurred in 8.2% that's in a six month period among Prevnar 13 recipients and 7.2% among Prevnar, that's Prevnar 7 recipients." "Now, from the perspective of just safety, from a parent, I might go, oh my goodness, that is highly concerning. But from the perspective of the FDA, as long as the experimental group and the control group have a similar rate, that's deemed safe because they're comparing it to quote unquote the standard of care. Right." "So you might say, well, maybe this is just a fluke, this super high rate of adverse events and totally healthy infants and toddlers. Right. Maybe we know for sure, Prevnar 7 is safe because that had a long-term placebo-controlled trial. Right. And before we flip there, let's just read this one sentence. I have somebody, one of my favorite sentences." "It says, the longer reporting period, meaning six months, which I normally never do, vaccine trials may have resulted in serious adverse events reported in a higher percentage of subjects than for other vaccines. Oh, wait a second. We finally looked for six months instead of a few days and a few weeks, and we found a super high rate." "So what's our excuse for the high rate? Oh my God. You can't pick stuff up. And here's another piece I can never make up. And honestly, if I'd have thought of the most nefarious things I could say about vaccines, I would never have said Hep B was licensed on five days because I thought it was totally nuts." "And I'm gonna show you another thing that I think I think it's totally nuts. I'm gonna open up the package insert for Prevnar 7. So you remember this product that had the 7.2% adverse event rate? Yes. So you might hope that here's the package insert for that product. So safety was reviewed in this one, depending on what they looked at for days or maybe weeks." "So they didn't have six months. And they were comparing Prevnar with a control. Well, you hope the control would be what? Because there's no other product on the market. That's a seven valent meningococcal vaccine in the U S. So you could, you should have compared it against it. We'll see about, but you see the little cross right there. Yes. Let's go down right here and let's see what the control was." "The control was another unlicensed product. So they had a clinical trial for this, for Prevnar 7 that wasn't six months. It was far shorter and they didn't prepare it against the placebo. Even though there was no 7-valent and meningococcal vaccine that I'm aware of that was on the market license in the US. So there's no standard of care. They should use a placebo. What do they use? Another. Another unlicensed vaccine." "Again, I'm laughing, but it's definitely serious too. And I say it because it really goes back to your point about religion. And it's a long way to answer your question, I know, but yes, there is what is said about these products, what believed about these products." "And you can bring a claim for vaccine injury, okay, in America and in other countries, but you can't sue the manufacturer. In America, you sue the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. You sue the federal health authorities that tell you it's safe. By Michael Washburn The Epoch Times December 9, 2024 https://www.theepochtimes.com/us/daniel-penny-found-not-guilty-in-subway-death-of-jordan-neely-5770199 NEW YORK CITY - A Manhattan jury on Dec. 9 acquitted Daniel Penny of criminally negligent homicide over the death of Jordan Neely, a mentally ill homeless man whom Penny put in a chokehold and wrestled to the ground on a subway in May of last year. On Friday, Judge Maxwell Wiley had agreed to dismiss the top charge of manslaughter in the second degree when the jury could not reach a unanimous decision after three days of deliberation. As soon as the jury foreperson said "not guilty," cheers and applause briefly rang out near the front of the courtroom before the court officers told everyone to quiet down under threat of removal. Among Neely's family and supporters, there was a much different reaction. Court officers asked two people to leave because of their enraged comments and demeanor. The verdict brings a conclusion to a closely watched trial that took a little over one month, from voir dire and the seating of a jury at the end of October to witness testimony throughout November up to this week's closing statements and jury deliberations. Witnesses were unanimous that Neely got onto an uptown F train at Manhattan's Second Avenue station and immediately began screaming that he was hungry, homeless, and did not care if he went back to prison. Their testimony differed slightly as to the explicitness of Neely's threats. Some said he had cried out that he was willing to hurt others if they did not give him what he sought. Lori Sitro, who had her small son with her on the train when Neely got on at Second Avenue, said Neely's conduct made her fear for the boy's safety so much that she placed his stroller in front of the boy to shield him from Neely. The boy was too small to move quickly off the train with her, Sitro said, who expressed gratitude toward Penny for taking swift action to protect passengers. Sitro's testimony was consistent with that of others present, such as Yvette Rosario, who said Neely's conduct scared her so badly she thought she might pass out, and she placed her head on a friend's chest. Dan Couvreur said the incident went far beyond other tense moments he had experienced on the subway. Another witness, Alethea Gittings, called Neely's words "very loud, very menacing, very disturbing," and thanked Penny for stepping in to protect her and others on the train. The lead prosecutor, Dafna Yoran, noted in her closing statements to the jury on Dec. 3 that some of the jurors might now feel grateful to Penny for springing into action to protect passengers and that weighing his potential guilt or innocence would not be easy. Yoran said that it might be hard to convict a man who had tried to do the right thing and did not act with the intent to take someone's life. The defense argued that in light of the testimony of those present on the F train, Penny had acted bravely and selflessly and the government was trying to make a scapegoat of a good man. The prosecution and defense differed sharply as to the causes of Neely's death, the appropriateness of using deadly physical force to protect passengers on the train from Neely, and the validity of defense claims that Penny's actions were justified under New York law. A Parade of Witnesses Over the trial, the jury heard from an array of witnesses including people who were present on the F train and saw Penny and Neely struggle, former Marine comrades of Penny's, a friend of the defendant, his mother, and two medical experts who contradicted each other's accounts of how Neely had died. Prosecutors brought to the stand Dr. Cynthia Harris, a New York City medical examiner who performed Neely's autopsy. Harris said she had found synthetic cannabinoids in Neely's body that were more potent than marijuana and were, in fact, on par with cocaine in terms of their ability to make someone aggressive. She said the vascular compromise and airway compromise that Penny's chokehold inflicted were the causes of Neely's death. These resulted in "a low-oxygen state for the brain to be at," a condition "sufficient to cause death," Harris testified under oath on Nov. 15. The defense sought to counter those claims and raise reasonable doubts about the prosecution's theory by putting on the stand Satish Chundru, a certified forensic pathologist. Under direct examination from defense lawyer Steve Raiser, Chundru said that a number of factors, acting in concert, had brought about the death of Jordan Neely. Chundru said Harris should have considered the role of other factors, such as the drugs in his system, his schizophrenia, and a sickle cell trait that became a crisis under the stress of the chokehold. He said that red blood cells in the body of someone with this trait change shape under stress. Instead of their usual round form, they take on what Chundru described as a "crescent moon or banana shape," and no longer carry out their critical life-supporting function of conveying oxygen to tissue cells. During the chokehold, Neely suffered a sickle cell crisis, and died as a direct consequence of it, Chundru stated. He argued that blaming the death solely on the chokehold ignored the extent of Neely's sickle cell condition and its propensity to have fatal complications during an incident that would not be deadly for the average person. Differing Theories The prosecution and defense clashed repeatedly over what cell phone footage taken at the scene of the incident did or did not capture. Lawyers for both sides continually played this footage on screens in the courtroom and shared conflicting theories as to when Neely lost consciousness and the meaning of nonverbal evidence such as the position of his tongue and motions of his legs while he lay prone in Penny's chokehold. Yoran sought to impeach testimony from Chundru that made Neely out to be conscious and still struggling at a point in a video when she argued Penny had made him lose consciousness. Yet another aspect of the case had to do with Penny's character. While Wiley, the judge, leaned in favor of prosecution arguments that character witness testimony was immaterial in a case of this kind, the judge briefly allowed Penny's lawyers to put people on the stand who had served with Penny in the Marines. The Secret Service apologized to a salon owner in Massachusetts who alleged that individuals broke into her business to use the bathroom during the agency's security work for a nearby Veep Kamala Harris fundraiser. Berkshires businesswoman Alicia Powers says someone picked the lock and broke into her store for the bathroom -- after a Secret Service officer covered a camera outside her salon with tape. The people who proceeded to use the bathroom included a pair in emergency medical uniforms, a person in camouflage law-enforcement gear and someone in a dark suit and white shirt similar to a Secret Service officer who guarded the door, Powers said, citing footage. A Secret Service rep was adamant that agents would not break into buildings like that -- but did not deny that an officer covered her camera with tape, an act that was captured by surveillance footage, and appeared to cop some sort of mea culpa in a statement. Footage captured a Secret Service agent taping a security camera at the Massachusetts salon, the store's owner says. "The Secret Service has since communicated with the affected business owner. We hold these relationships in the highest regard and our personnel would not enter, or instruct our partners to enter, a business without the owner's permission," Secret Service spokesperson Melissa McKenzie said. Powers said the head of the Secret Service's Boston-based field office called her to apologize, according to Business Insider. "He said to me everything that was done was done very wrong," Powers told the outlet. "They were not supposed to tape my camera without permission. By Adam Reiss, Gary Grumbach, Dareh Gregorian, Tom Winter and Jillian Frankel NBC News May 30, 2024 A New York jury on Thursday found Donald Trump guilty on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records — the first time a former U.S. president has been convicted of a crime. The jury reached its verdict in the historic case after 9½ hours of deliberations, which began Wednesday. He'll be sentenced on July 11, four days before the Republican National Convention. He faces penalties from a fine to four years in prison on each count, although it's expected he would be sentenced for the offenses concurrently, not consecutively. "This was a disgrace. This was a rigged trial by a conflicted judge who was corrupt," Trump fumed to reporters afterward. The verdict was read in the Manhattan courtroom where Trump has been on trial since April 15. He had pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment his former lawyer Michael Cohen made to adult film star Stormy Daniels in the final weeks of the 2016 presidential election. Trump looked down with his eyes narrowed as the jury foreperson read the word "guilty" to each count. The judge thanked the jurors for their service in the weekslong trial. "You gave this matter the attention it deserved, and I want to thank you for that," Judge Juan Merchan told them. Trump appeared to be scowling at the jurors as they walked by him on their way out of the courtroom. Trump's attorney Todd Blanche made a motion for acquittal after the jury left the room, which the judge denied. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg would not comment on what type of sentence he might seek, saying his office would do its talking in court papers. "While this defendant may be unlike any other in American history, we arrived at this trial and ultimately today at this verdict in the same manner as every other case that comes to the courtroom doors — by following the facts and the law in doing so, without fear or favor," Bragg said. Asked for his reaction to the verdict, Bragg, who was inundated with threats from Trump supporters during the probe, said, "I did my job. We did our job." Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, immediately set out fundraising off the news, posting on his website that he's "a political prisoner" and urging his followers to give money. Legal experts have told NBC News that even if Trump is sentenced to time behind bars, he'd most likely be allowed to remain out of jail while he appeals the verdict, a process that could take months or more. That means the sentence would most likely not interfere with his ability to accept the Republican nomination for president at the July convention. And it likely wouldn't impact his ability to be elected. "There are no other qualifications other than those in the Constitution," Chuck Rosenberg, a former U.S. attorney and NBC News & MSNBC Legal Analyst said following Thursday's verdict. President Joe Biden's campaign praised the verdict in a statement but stressed that Trump needs to be defeated in November. "In New York today, we saw that no one is above the law," said the campaign's communications director, Michael Tyler, but the "verdict does not change the fact that the American people face a simple reality. There is still only one way to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office: at the ballot box." In his closing argument this week, prosecutor Joshua Steinglass told the jury that "the law is the law, and it applies to everyone equally. There is no special standard for this defendant." "You, the jury, have the ability to hold the defendant accountable," Steinglass said. Trump had maintained that the DA's office had no case and that there had been no crime. "President Trump is innocent. He did not commit any crimes," Blanche said in his closing statement, arguing the payments to Cohen were legitimate. Prosecutors said the disguised payment to Cohen was part of a "planned, coordinated long-running conspiracy to influence the 2016 election, to help Donald Trump get elected through illegal expenditures, to silence people who had something bad to say about his behavior, using doctored corporate records and bank forms to conceal those payments along the way." "It was election fraud. Pure and simple," prosecutor Matthew Colangelo said in his opening statement. While Trump wasn't charged with conspiracy, prosecutors argued he caused the records to be falsified because he was trying to cover up a violation of state election law — and falsifying business records with the intent to cover another crime raises the offense from a misdemeanor to a felony. Trump was convicted after a sensational weekslong trial that included combative testimony from Cohen, Trump's self-described former fixer, and Daniels, who testified that she had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006 after she met him at a celebrity golf tournament. Trump has denied her claim, and his attorney had suggested that Cohen acted on his own because he thought it would make "the boss" happy. Other witnesses included former White House staffers, among them adviser Hope Hicks, former Trump Organization executives and former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker. Trump didn't take the witness stand to offer his own account of what happened, even though he proclaimed before the trial began that he would "absolutely" testify. The defense's main witness was Robert Costello, a lawyer whom Cohen considered retaining in 2018. Costello, who testified that Cohen had told him Trump had nothing to do with the Daniels' payment, enraged Merchan by making disrespectful comments and faces on the stand. At one point, the judge cleared the courtroom during Costello's testimony and threatened to hold him in contempt. Cohen testified that he lied to Costello because he didn't trust him and that he'd lied to others about Trump's involvement at the time because he wanted to protect his former boss. Cohen was the lone witness to testify to Trump's direct involvement in the $130,000 payment and the subsequent reimbursement plan. Blanche spent days challenging his credibility, getting Cohen to acknowledge he has a history of lying, including under oath. Cohen said he was paid the Daniels cash in a series of payments from Trump throughout 2017 that the Trump Organization characterized as payments pursuant to a retainer agreement "for legal services rendered." Prosecutors said there was no such agreement, and Cohen's version of events was supported by documentary evidence and witness testimony. Blanche contended that the series of checks then-President Trump paid Cohen in 2017 "was not a payback to Mr. Cohen for the money that he gave to Ms. Daniels" and that he was being paid for his legal work as Trump's personal lawyer. Testimony from Jeff McConney, a former senior vice president at Trump's company, challenged that position. McConney said the company's chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, told him that Cohen was being reimbursed for a $130,000 payment, and prosecutors entered Weisselberg's handwritten notes about the payment formula as evidence. Cohen said Trump agreed to the arrangement in a meeting with him and Weisselberg just days before he was inaugurated as the 45th president. Weisselberg didn't testify. He's in jail on a perjury charge related to his testimony in New York Attorney General Letitia James' civil fraud case against Trump and his company. Cohen, McConney and other witnesses said Weisselberg, who spent decades working for Trump, always sought his approval for large expenditures. In all, the prosecution called 20 witnesses, while the defense called two. Trump had frequently claimed, falsely, that the charges against him were a political concoction orchestrated by Biden to keep him off the campaign trail. But Trump eventually managed to bring the campaign to the courtroom, hosting top Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana and Sens. JD Vance of Ohio and Rick Scott of Florida, as his guests in court. Trump also used court breaks to tout political messages to his supporters, while his surrogates sidestepped Merchan's gag order by attacking witnesses, individual prosecutors and Merchan's daughter. Merchan fined Trump $10,000 during the trial for violating his order, including attacks on Cohen and Daniels, and warned he could have him locked up if he continued violating the order. Cohen celebrated the verdict in a post on X. "Today is an important day for accountability and the rule of law. While it has been a difficult journey for me and my family, the truth always matters," Cohen wrote. Trump was indicted in March of last year after a yearslong investigation by Bragg and his predecessor, Cyrus Vance.
