The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office released a critical incident report determining whether or not a deputy was justified in using deadly force in a shooting that took place on Dec. 28.

The sheriff’s office said they were called to a home on Mountain Lake Lane in Travelers Rest in reference to suicidal person.

In the critical incident report, a 911 call was released and the suspect’s wife said her husband had been drinking, and she heard a gunshot from another room. She was worried he had shot himself.

When a deputy arrived on scene, body cam footage shows the suspect, 66-year-old Joseph Dominic Mason, had not shot himself but was standing on the porch armed with a firearm. When asked to get on the ground, Mason refused to do so and was made a comment about shooting the deputy.

The sheriff’s office said as the deputy approached the home, he observed the armed suspect maneuver his position and what he perceived to threaten the harm of bystanders and himself. That’s when he fired and shot Mason.

The sheriff’s office said medical aid was provided and Mason was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
