Volkswagen has developed an advanced safety feature known as Emergency Assist, designed to intervene if it detects that the driver is unresponsive, potentially due to fatigue or a medical emergency. This system is part of Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE suite of safety technologies.

How Emergency Assist Works:
1. Monitoring Driver Activity: The system continuously monitors steering wheel movements to assess driver engagement. If it detects a lack of steering input over a specified period, it assumes the driver may be inattentive or incapacitated.
2. Alerting the Driver: Initially, the system attempts to alert the driver through visual and audible warnings, prompting them to take control of the vehicle.
3. Taking Control: If the driver remains unresponsive, Emergency Assist can:
• Maintain the vehicle within its lane.
• Gradually decelerate to a complete stop.
• Activate hazard lights to warn other road users.
• Engage the parking brake once the vehicle has stopped.

This feature enhances safety by ensuring that if a driver becomes unresponsive, the vehicle can safely come to a halt and alert others on the road.
