SHOCK Shift In Egypt Sends Israel Into PANIC!

Right, so massive escalation on the Egyptian Gaza border and whilst we figured Egypt and Israel were broadly getting along now it seemed. They were taking part in the ongoing discussions regarding the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire, even if Israel weren’t really engaging, they’ll never agree to the second phase, Netanyahu has been told his government will be collapsed by his hard right coalition partners if he does but with Jordan now having declared any attempt to force the people of Gaza into their territory as per Donald Trump’s ridiculous ethnic cleansing plan, a plan the far right of the Netanyahu coalition government are in love with and which they expect Netanyahu to make good on, it seems there has been a marked shift on Egypt’s side too, despite Egypt still getting US funding and Jordan having had it cut off. Despite Egypt indeed having allegedly aided the Palestinian Authority in their takeover from the Israelis of the Rafah Border Crossing on the Philadelphi Corridor, the border as that is between Gaza and Egypt. But that US funding it seems is not enough to placate Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, because even he draws the line at taking Donald Trump at his word, even if he will take Netanyahu at his and this mad plan has got Sisi parking tanks outside the gates of Rafah.
Right, so a standoff is beginning it seems out side of the gates of Rafah on the Egypt Gaza border. Diplomacy always sits on shaky ground when you bring tanks into the equation and Egypt have done precisely this, a move that can be blamed on the bloated satsuma now running the US, Donald Trump.
It is his Gaza ethnic cleansing scheme that is yet again causing chaos, Egypt and Jordan will be taking the people of Gaza Trump has said, Egypt and Jordan both said no, Trump said you will, Jordan said war with Israel if you try it and Egypt, well, they’ve moved their pieces into place seemingly should anyone attempt to force Gazans through the Rafah Border Crossing.
The funniest aspect of this set of events I’ve found, if you can call parking tanks on someone else’s lawn funny, is the set of events that have now led up to this. Where Jordan came out quickly with a statement saying any attempt at sending the people of Gaza into their land would be a declaration of war, no such immediate threat came from Egypt. Sure both nations immediately refused to take the people of Gaza, refused to be party to ethnic cleansing of fellow Arabs, no statement of intent to fight back came until after Trump himself apparently rang Sisi, a phone call that evidently went so well, tanks got sent into the Sinai afterwards!
That isn’t to say Egypt have been doing nothing over the last couple of weeks since Trump hatched his mad Gaza-lago plan though.
There have been small pro-Sisi protests happening at the Rafah crossing, and that might not sound particularly significant, but it’s a military zone and nobody is supposed to be there normally, yet this is exactly where these demonstrations have been happening, where the IDF and the Palestian Authority can see it, but now of course this area has lots of Egyptian tanks instead, so an escalation of Egypts refusal to go along with Trump and Israel too, Netanyahu now in the position of somehow making Trump’s plan a reality to remain in post, but still with nowhere to send these people, because nobody is going to side with Israel and commit ethnic cleansing for their benefit only. There’s no win in that for any other nation, just massive, global diplomatic damage and it is just plain wrong of course.
Now for as much as there have been these pro Sisi demonstrations, there’s little to big up Sisi over all in all. He’s been seen as far to placating of Israel, far too willing to acquiesce to them in talks, he has suppressed Pro Palestinian action which has included the detention of some 250 football fans, students and activists. He has been allowing state linked companies to profit from movement of people and aid via the Rafah Crossing – how many wealthy Palestinians have been able to escape - and has also been overtly pro US, though prior of course to Trump coming along with this crackpot plan of his now.
Yet still it would come to something if Egypt and Israel did end up trading blows here as much of the Israeli media is wailing about of course. Egypt was the first Arab nation in the region to normalise relations with Israel, the Camp David Peace Accords of 1979, not only bringing an end to war between the two countries but also saw Egypt formally recognise the Israeli state. Those Peace Accords of course have been violated by Israel for more than a year now though, since they seized control of the Philadelphi Corridor, yet Egypt have not taken overt action over this, even enabled the PA to take over the Corridor from Israeli control on behalf of Israel.
Over the last year there have been for and against actions as to whether matters were coming to a head between the two nations, Sisi seemingly emboldened one minute and backing down the next, but it is Trump’s plan that has seemingly brought that prospect closer than ever now, though Egypt is apparently trying to find a work around as this excerpt from Middle East Eye explains:
‘Initially, the US request was limited to hosting armed factions that participated in the recent 15-month war, similar to the Palestinian Liberation Organisation’s forced exit from Lebanon to Tunisia following the Israeli invasion in 1982,” the source told MEE on condition of anonymity.
“Egyptian intelligence saw this as a major national security threat, fearing that these factions could use their new base as a launching pad for military operations against Israel, which might provoke Israeli retaliation against Egypt,” the source added.
However, the situation escalated when Trump proposed the displacement of all two million residents of Gaza, he explained.
Former Egyptian ambassador to the UN, Moataz Ahmadein, said Trump's words “should be taken very seriously”…
Two diplomatic sources - one Egyptian and one Arab - revealed that Arab countries, led by Egypt, are scrambling to offer alternatives to Trump’s displacement plan.
Among the proposals discussed is a major reconstruction initiative involving US companies in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, and Gaza - without displacing its residents. This plan would be funded through lucrative Arab contracts to entice Trump and divert his attention from forced relocation.
However, the Egyptian foreign ministry has advised against engaging in such negotiations, fearing that offering alternatives would put Egypt in a weak position, making it appear responsible for solving the crisis, the Egyptian diplomatic source said.
Another alternative proposed is a phased reconstruction of Gaza, with residents being temporarily relocated within the strip in rotation as different areas are rebuilt. Arab forces could be deployed to oversee the process.
A well-informed Egyptian political source suggested that President Sisi is caught between a rock and a hard place.
“Sisi might be unable to completely reject Trump’s request, yet accepting it could be catastrophic for his regime,” the source told MEE.
“Some officials have begun using previously unheard phrases in Egyptian political circles, such as ‘the end of the regime’s legitimacy’ and concerns about a possible coup if the plan is accepted,” the source added.’
Given Sisi’s conduct, blowing hot and cold towards Israel and the US, an anti Palestinian stance at times, it’s hard to really feel any sympathy towards a leader who seemingly has been avoiding actually taking a lead here, but tanks parked on Israel’s lawn so to speak are pretty hard to ignore and it seems that despite claims that he is caught between a rock and a hard place, he’d rather fight than risk a coup by accepting Trump’s plan, but this could simply all about Sisi blowing hot right now, only to back down again in the coming days.
That said, it isn’t as if Egypt don’t have the clout to go toe to toe with Israel. Between active and reserve soldiers, Egypt has an army a million strong. It has Abrams tanks, Apache helicopters and F-16s, they wouldn’t be a pushover and this has even been admitted by a former Israeli general who said:
‘The Egyptian army is the strongest army in the Middle East, with 4,000 tanks, 2,000 aircraft. For years, they've been building highways into Sinai. We're the target. We don't even have a brigade to stand against them.’
Past wars against Israel might not have gone Egypt’s way, but times have changed, it is just a case of whether or not they have a President who will fight or flee when it comes down to it. Trump’s plan isn’t going to go away yet, so he might have to finally pick a side, but he will have to choose very carefully.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the Rafah Border Crossing, back in Israel, there has been a major split in the IDF since the departure of former defence minister Yoav Gallant, because the new guy, Israel Katz, seems to be on a power trip of Trumpian proportions, throwing his weight around where it isn’t wanted and, well, the mood is turning mutinous.
