The project's CIA cryptonym is a combination of the digraph MK, indicating the sponsorship of the Technical Services Staff (TSS) & the word Ultra which formerly designated the most secret classification of World War II intelligence

MK Ultra was government program run by the Central Intelligence Agency, originally started as something called Blue Bird (1948-1949); morphed into Artichoke & then in 1952 became MK Ultra.

It was a mind-control program, brain-washing program. The CIA was trying to learn how to control people's behavior, without their knowledge. Exposed in senate & congressional hearings in the 70's. No wide spread awareness about it until 1974. When Seymour Hersch the New York times reporter, reported it on the front page of the paper.

Their main objective was to commit to create what they called 'hypno programmed assassins'. People who would kill on command, popularly known as 'Manchurian Candidates' after a book written in 1962 & later became a movie & again another movie

Through the use of Drugs & Hypnotism, the objective create agents who would unknowingly act & commit murders against their moral code & have no memory of their programming & be amnesiac to the act; after the fact.

That was their main goal. They were also trying to create couriers, people you know military people they could implant messages. Send them across dangerous areas, at that time it was the Vietnam war; delivery messages & then have them wiped from their memories in case they were captured.

Roger Smith was supervising Charles Manson when he became exactly what the MK Ultra program had been trying to create & do. At that point had been around 15-17 years when it was all exposed in the 70's.

The hearings; 1st the Rockefeller Commission Hearings & the Church Hearings & then finally senators Ted Kennedy & Daniel K. Inouye (Hawaii) held hearings the CIA admitted that they had done. No one would say exactly what they did, all the records have been destroyed.

The 2 people in charge - Richard Helms who become director of the CIA in the 60's & Dr. Sidney Gottlieb - a mad scientist who had supervised all that they had; safe houses in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles.

Where they would experiment on people that were lured into these apartments & houses that either looked like brothels or hippie communes. The people who were working at the Haight-Ashbury free medical clinic that was run by another Smith, that makes it a little confusing. But Dr. David Smith who founded it, had given an office to a scientist named Louis Jolyon West. Who was identified in the hearings of the 70's as the top MK Ultra researcher.

[Louis Jolyon West (October 6, 1924 – January 2, 1999) was an American psychiatrist involved in the public sphere. In 1954, at the age of 29 & with no previous tenure-track appointment, he became a full professor & chair of psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine.

From 1969 to 1989, he served as chair of psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine & the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute.

West's work on brainwashing techniques allowed him to exonerate U.S. servicemen under suspicion of treason for making false confessions during the Korean War-era. This brought him to the attention of the CIA. He pioneered research into the use & abuse of LSD.
West was also active in studying the creation & management of cults & anti-death penalty activism. Along with friend Charlton Heston, he supported the Civil Rights Movement, frequently participating in sit-ins & rallies]

He was an academic, come out of the military; he denied ever being involved in MK Ultra. - learned that West had been at the same place that Manson was in the Haight in the summer that Manson became exactly what the CIA was trying to create.

He interviewed West about 7 years before - on stories about celebrity stalkers. The people who were obsessed with stars & then only to kill them or try to kill them. He was an expert in violence & hypnotism, brainwashing. He was a chair at the psychiatry department at UCLA at that point. He was dead when his name came up in the Manson's story - there had been these allegations that he had been involved in Mk Ultra. Which he always denied it. He was never prosecuted, never even investigated.

He went to his grave threatening to sue anyone who said he might have anything to do with this kind of a program
