Sermon on Luke 9:57-62 - Lords Day February 9th, 2025 - Trinity Reformed Church
What does it mean to be a true follower of Christ? “And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭9‬:‭58‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

1. The Deceived Disciple - verse 57 - this disciple probably is thinking they are on their way to victory in the sense of Christ taking an earthly kingdom. A lesson on the true nature of the kingdom and what it costs. V58 - Jesus tells him the cost of following Him.
2. The delayed disciple. - V59 to be a disciple is to love Him and not the world. The mans father is probably alive and well.. He wants to follow Christ but not now.. V60 - Jesus answers pointing out spiritual deadness. Spiritual deadness loves the world. If we live for this world the luxuries and the wealth we are already dead. Do not live for or love the world.
3. Divided discipleship - Christ wants complete commitment. V59 the disciple is not completely committed. You can be mixed have one foot in the world and the other following Christ. Jesus is not teaching to totally cut off friends and family . Luke 9:62 (NKJV) But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
4. True Discipleship understands what it means to follow Christ. It means that everything here must be used for the kingdom of Christ. It means to not follow or love the world.. repent of your sins and follow Him. He will forgive us.
