Solar Sage is a member of the Enlightment-Mint family.
Solar Sage costs 0 Sun.
When planted, Solar Sage gives 50 Sun. (+50 Sun at level 3.)
Solar Sage will enlighten the first zombie which approaches him - if said zombie can be enlightened. This act will consume Solar Sage. This selfless act will give 100 Sun. (+50 Sun at level 7.)
Enlightened zombies move off the lawn, threatening Dave no more.
Every five (5) seconds, the enlightened zombie will drop 50 Sun. (-0.5 seconds at level 5 and 9. +10 Sun on levels 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10.)
Enlightened zombies have a 10% chance to convert other zombies. (+5% chance at levels 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10.)
When given plant food, Solar Sage will enlighten all normal zombies in a 3x3 area around it.

Commentary:
Solar Sage doesn't sound impressive when reading the description. It feels like it should be a 2ndary Sun producer with an early game use case of eliminating that first zombie.

Yet Solar Sage is more than a no-Sun cost version of Sun Bean. Solar Sage can be used as the only Sun producer on many levels. Yes, this requires Solar Sage to have been leveled up a few times. For one plant to be a Sun producer, a zombie eliminator and in certain cases essentially a Cherry Bomb, what's not to like?

Bottom Line:
Solar Sage is one of the best plants in the game. Solar Sage can easily be fit into many setups. There is really no reason not to obtain and level this amazing plant.
