A widespread avian influenza outbreak has caused a significant shortage of eggs across the United States. The agriculture industry predicts that the cost of eggs will continue to increase this year. 全美各地的餐館正面臨雞蛋短缺問題，美國農業部的數據顯示，中西部地區一打大雞蛋如今平均批發價為7.08美元，比兩年前貴了六倍。
自2022年爆發禽流感以來，美國已經損失1億零400萬只產蛋母雞，單在過去四個月就撲殺了2900萬只雞，導致雞蛋價格屢創新高。
在美國南部六州有14家分店的連鎖餐廳Biscuit Belly說，他們改而購買較便宜的雞蛋，現在買的雞蛋一箱55美元、內含15打大的棕色雞蛋。這比之前買的中型白色雞蛋便宜了21%，不過與一年前相比，仍貴了一倍，所以餐廳為了進一步節約成本，打算舍棄雞蛋，改用液蛋制作煎蛋卷、炒蛋和面糊。
在紐約市，Whole Foods超市一打非籠養雞蛋售價高達11.99美元，部分分店還限制顧客一次只能購買最多三盒雞蛋。上周，紐約長島納蘇郡的居民發現Whole Foods購物網站上一種牧場非籠養雞蛋和一種散養雞蛋已經售罄缺貨。
有機雞蛋也供不應求。上周末，紐約布魯克林區ShopRite超市的冷藏貨架幾乎空無一物，僅剩幾盒雞蛋，定價大約是每個雞蛋1美元。根據雜貨配送應用程序Instacart，附近的Costco超市只剩下鵪鶉蛋，雞蛋都賣光了。
在芝加哥，Aldi、Fresh Thyme、Mariano’s等超市限定顧客每人只能購買兩盒雞蛋。Mariano’s門上還貼了雞蛋短缺的告示。
大宗商品價格數據供應商Expana的美洲雞蛋業務主編里斯波利說，受最近一波禽流感影響的農場大多數是向零售業供應雞蛋，所以超市首當其沖。不過隨著雞蛋價格持續飆升，影響範圍正蔓延到餐飲業。美國農業部預計，今年農場雞蛋價格還將上漲45%。
