Rahan.
Episode One Hundred and Fifty-One.
By Roger Lecureux, drawn by Romero.
A retelling of Episode 62, "The share of the Chiefs".
The Beginning of the Balance.
Is it conceivable that a clan would leave one of its own in such a state of obvious physical weakness? And yet he was a small man.
The son of Crao remembered the distant days when he too had suffered from hunger.
The starving child barely had the strength to chew the root.
Have you lost your way in the forest?
Rahan will take you back to your people, little man.
This, this, this is useless! O-Naa and Ka-haag ate all the meat!
Rahan will talk to them!
Following the child's tracks, Rahan emerged into a rocky cirque.
Men and women were prostrate at the entrance to a cavern.
Page Two.
This little man belongs to your clan, does he not?
What unworthy hunters are you to leave him without food?
Where are O'Naa and Ka-Haag, where are those "Who-Ate-All-The-Meat"?
I am O'Naa-the-chief!
And this is Ka-Haag-the-sorcerer, and Traa and Tanangg, our best hunters.
Four men came out of the cave. They were sturdy.
And the "Best" are you, huh?
Rahan despises the chiefs and sorcerers who do not know how to lead their clan in the game-filled territories!
But who are you yourself, to observe and discuss our custom?
I am Rahan, the son of Crao!
If your custom is to let hunger gnaw at the little ones, Rahan is against your custom!
If the gods of hunting were favorable to us, everyone would eat their fill!
But game is rare! Custom dictates that the best of the clan eat first!
Traa and Trang will make you pay for this insolence, "Fire-Hair"!
Page Three.
Rahan hates fighting with "Those-who-walk-upright"
But when he is obliged.
He will not run away from the fight!
Thwack!
A quick blow disarms Traa, another, lightning-fast, throws him to the ground!
But the mighty Tangg surrounded him.
Tang is more loyal!
He does not use a spear!
But Rahan, still has to get rid of him!
Argh!
A roar of admiration arose. Torn from the ground, the hunter turned over Rahan's shoulder.
Alone, O'Naa the chief and La-Haag the sorcerer Shouted.
Your knife, Tangg! Kill him! Kill him!
No! "Fire-Hair" Did not draw his weapon!
He defeated Tangg fairly! Tangg will be fair too!
Page Four.
Rahan is a brave man and Tangg will share his meat with him!
The son of Crao had just made an ally, but also three enemies!
Far from your territory, Rahan has crossed a forest full of game.
He does not want your meat, Tangg! Better, he will bring some back for these little men!
Which of you will dare to accompany Rahan!?
The men of the clan remained prostrate but.
The clan does not hear wise words often, Rahan! Tang will go with you!
It was only after a long walk that Rahan and his new companion reached a thick forest.
Why do your people not abandon their territory without trees and without game!?
Ka-Haag the sorcerer says that we were born there and that we must die there!
Tangg spoke of the unjust custom of his clan.
From the rare captured beasts, the chief and the sorcerer first took their shares. Traa and himself theirs.
Page Five.
And the others share what is left!
It is often very little. And sometimes it is nothing!
Watch out Tangg! There are "Boars" lurking around here!
Rahan had barely noticed the tracks when the ground shook and a herd burst out of the undergrowth and charged them!
A herd from which they could only flee!
The son of Crao was climbing into a tree when Tangg, struggling against a root, collapsed.
He was going to be crushed, crushed, disemboweled.
Your hand, Tangg! Your hand!
The hunter who was straightening up saw Rahan swooping down on him, as agile as a "Four-Hands".
He suddenly felt himself being grabbed, carried away into the void!
And the herd surged beneath him.
He continued his course for a moment and returned under the tree where the two men had taken refuge.
We will only escape them by the path of the "Four-Hands"!
Page Six.
But we will not return to your people empty-handed!
Rahan had let himself fall into the void.
What. What.
Suspended from the line, he brushed dangerously against the backs of the large wild boars and, in flight, grabbed the marcassin by the scruff of the neck!
A little later.
What a pity to abandon so much meat!
We could not face those "Boars", Tangg! But we will bring them to us!
O'Naa, Ka-Haag, Traa and the others were waiting for their return.
A "Marca"! For moons, O'Naa has forgotten the taste of this flesh!
This "Marca" is returning to him!
O-Naa only thinks about filling her belly with good flesh!
Rahan, he only thinks about those!
Tomorrow, the little men will eat!
Tang had now taken Rahan's side.
It was he who, until the end of the day, protected the wild boar.
Page Seven.
While the son of Crao made a bow, flexible with long arrows.
We should have killed them both!
At nightfall Rahan and Tang returned to the forest. Tied to a tree, the wild boar grunted.
Do you think "They" will come?
They will come! They always come!
It was a long wait.
It was only at daybreak that a pair of large "Boars" emerged and came to sniff out the marcassin.
When these beasts sensed the danger, it was too late.
Rahan's arrow and Tangg's spear had flown away at the same time!
The wild boars were so heavy that the two companions could only bring one back to the cave.
Here is something to feed the whole clan!
And you will find another "Boar" at the edge of the forest!
Rahan expected an ovation.
But everyone was frozen.
Rahan understands!
They are waiting for O-Naa and Ka-Haag to decide!
Page Eight.
The chief and the sorcerer were, in fact, preparing to skin the boar.
Back!
It is Rahan, who killed the "Boar."
He is the one who will share it!
Soon after, the ivory cutlass cut into the flesh.
The sharing will be fair! Everyone will receive the same share!
You want to deceive the clan, "Fire-Hair"!
A big piece sometimes contains less flesh than a small one!
What proof will we have, that your shares will be equal?!
Rahan was thinking about how to make a fair, indisputable division.
And suddenly.
Rahan knows how to convince you!
Two scenes then come back to his mind, a game that the children of the bleu mountain sometimes played. And that day when he was left hanging in the void, held by a rock balancing his weight.
Ha-ha-ha!
Combining the two ideas, he designed a rudimentary scale.
He placed on it two pieces of meat that he estimated to be of the same weight but.
Page Nine.
This thing cannot prove anything! If you had not brought a "Boar", you would deserve to have your head broken.
The scales, off-center, even tipped towards the smaller piece!
Like this!
Vrang!
The blow on the "Balance" catapulted the piece of meat placed at the other end very high.
The son of Crao never despaired.
He quickly understood the cause of his failure.
The arm of the scale had to be perfectly balanced!
After some trial and error, he discovered the exact point of balance.
From now on you will never betray Rahan!
He notched the bamboo.
A notch that would serve as a reference point and facilitate the movement of the pendulum.
O'Naa can cut out whatever piece of meat he wants!
The chief feverishly cut himself a thick piece of flesh.
Understood. This piece is yours! But everyone will have the same share as you!
Page Ten.
The son of Crao, shortly after, proceeded with the trimming.
He added or subtracted carefully to balance the portions with that of the chief who served as tare.
And the clan, that day, was able to appease its hunger.
Thanks to the wonderful "Bamboo of Justice", Rahan has gained the trust of my brothers!
But he earned the hatred of O-Naa, Ka-Haag and Traa!
These three men, remaining apart, confered mysteriously.
The "Bamboo of Justice" is an evil for the three of us!
We must send "Fire-Hair" to the territory of shadows and return to custom!
Killing Rahan will be hard! Watch. The clan already considers him a leader!
Patience! An opportunity will present itself sooner or later!
That same day, the second wild boar was brought back from the forest.
You will not know hunger, brothers!
Rahan has discovered, ten arrows' range from here, a pit that can become a trap for big beasts!
Page Eleven.
Eager to put his idea into action, Rahan went to this pit at dawn.
It will take a lot of bamboo and palms to hide this trap!
Unaware that he had been followed, Rahan set to work.
"Fire-Hair" is alone, and we are far from the clan! Here is the opportunity we were hoping for!
The son of Crao was about to put down his load of bamboo when the trio rushed towards him.
He did not even have time to face them.
Argh!
Although the shock was harsh, he was only stunned. O-Naa's laughter reached him
Ha-ha-ha! Those of the clan will believe it was an accident.
They will only be able to pity this "Poor-hair-of-fire", who slipped into the trap that he was preparing!
Oh!
He. He is not dead!
He must be finished! Otherwise the clan will save him!
No vine, no roughness allowed Rahan to escape from the granite trap!
Large stones began to fall.
Page Twelve.
Which he could only avoid by sticking to the wall.
O-Naa, Ka-Haag and Traa are cowards!
This wall was as smooth as his ivory knife.
Rahan does not want to join the shadow kingdom!
Rahan wants to live!
Rocks kept falling, bigger and bigger.
To avoid one of them, Rahan jumped sideways.
And stumbled against one of the trunks that littered the bottom of the pit.
Oh, The Bamboo of Justice!
This trunk had reminded him of the "Balance." The blow of the Axe carried by O-Naa.
The piece of meat catapulted.
And if this trunk does not break Rahan could be thrown out of the trap too!
Page thirteen.
When the trio stood out against the sky, pushing a huge rock, he moved the trunk so that it was exactly at the point where the rock would fall.
And it fell, fell, fell. The son of Crao had closed his eyes.
Ra-ha-ha!
What followed was extraordinary, fantastic.
Rahan was propelled into the sky like a volcanic bomb.
Paralyzed with shock, the three cowards saw him spring from the pit and fall back behind them!
They made a move to flee, which Rahan had no trouble stopping.
It is your turn to visit this trap!
No!
Page Fourteen.
O-Naa was the first to fall into the pit.
Argh!
The chief had barely touched the bottom when La-Haag the sorcerer came to join him there!
The clan will decide your fate!
By momentarily forgetting Traa, the son of Crao committed a mistake.
For the rogue, thirty paces away, was going to throw his long lance!
“Fire Hair" is going to die! Traa cannot miss such a target!
Argh!
It was a howl that made Rahan turn around.
He saw Traa collapse, an arrow in his side.
Page Fifteen.
He also saw Tangg emerging from the undergrowth.
Tangg just arrived in time! This is the first time he uses this weapon!
Rahan could not have done better than Tangg!
Tangg, shortly after, informed the clan.
Rahan hunted for us, and these three rogues wanted to kill him!
May they be banished from the clan forever!
O-Naa and the sorcerer, at the bottom of the trap, were calling for help.
Their cries reached the cavern.
Hear them Tangg! Maybe we could.
Tang does not hear anything! And you, my brothers, do you hear anything!?
The clan hears nothing! We will obey Tangg from now on!
The son of Crao understood O-Naa and Ka-Haag were condemned!
In these fierce times, the justice of "Those-who-walk-upright" was sometimes implacable!
When Rahan left this clan, the new chief accompanied him to the hills.
We will never forget you "Fire-Hair"! Tangg will follow your advice.
He will lead his people to the game-filled lands. And never again will meat be shared except with the "Bamboo of Justice"! Farewell, brother, farewell!
